Anime Spotlight : Winter 2018 The Season of Slice of Life

2018 is off to a FANTASTIC start anime wise, not so much on the youtube front....I am pleased to say we have once again a very promising anime season with Winter 2018. There are quite a few sequels and a remake. Devilman Crybaby was released in it's entirety. Even though I didn't like it at all and personally think it's a complete waste of time. It is available on Netflix.

Sequels and spinoffs joining us this season are Basilisk - Ouka Ninpouchou, Emiya-san Chi no Kyou no Gohan(Fate/Stay Night cooking spinoff), Dagashi Kashi 2, Yowamushi Pedal - Glory Line, Nanatsu no Taizai Imashime no Fukkatsu, Overlord II and Cardcaptor Sakura_ Clear Card-hen.

As always I will only list the most promising NEW Anime starting this Season. So no sequels/spinoffs or the like. But enough rambling let's get to what you really wanted to see!

Violet Evergarden

Synopsis : There are words Violet heard on the battlefield, which she cannot forget. These words were given to her by someone she holds dear, more than anyone else. She does not yet know their meaning.

A certain point in time, in the continent of Telesis. The great war which divided the continent into North and South has ended after four years, and the people are welcoming a new generation.

Violet Evergarden, a young girl formerly known as "the weapon", has left the battlefield to start a new life at CH Postal Service. There, she is deeply moved by the work of "Auto Memories Dolls", who carry people's thoughts and convert them into words.

Violet begins her journey as an Auto Memories Doll, and comes face to face with various people's emotions and differing shapes of love. All the while searching for the meaning of those words.
Thoughts : KyoAni once again proves they are the best when it comes to animation. Yes UFOTABLE is flashier but just look at the A-list of great anime from KyoAni. Violet Evergarden is a visual and emotional treat thus far and I for one think it's the one to keep your eyes on this season.

Darling in the Franxx

Synopsis : They dream of one day flying into the endless sky, even though they are painfully aware of how far away the sky is beyond the glass that blocks their flight.

The distant future: Humanity established the mobile fort city, Plantation, upon the ruined wasteland and civilization flourished. Within the city were pilot quarters called Mistilteinn, otherwise known as the "Birdcage." That is where the children live... Not knowing anything of the outside world, and unaware of the vast sky. Their only mission in life was the fight.

Their enemies are the mysterious giant organisms known as Kyoryu. The children operate robots known as FRANXX in order to face these still unseen enemies because they believe that is their purpose in life. Among them was a boy who was once called a child prodigy: Code number 016, Hiro. However, now he's a failure and considered unneeded. Those who cannot pilot FRANXX basically do not exist.

One day, a mysterious girl called Zero Two appears in front of Hiro. From her face grew two alluring horns.

"I've found you, my Darling."
Thoughts : Trigger and Mecha, what a fantastic mix that almost always ends up being great. Darling in the FranXX has a first episode with quite a lot of information being shown to us, but what a first episode it was!

Citrus

Synopsis : Fashionable Yuzu imagined the first day at her new school she transferred to after her mother's remarriage a bit differently; she didn't know it'd be an ultra-strict and conservative girls' school. So instead of a sweet high-school romance, she butts heads with the stern student council president Mei - who turns out to be her new stepsister. And she has to learn that hate and attraction are often not that far apart.
Thoughts : I'll admit I am biased towards yuri anime, so shoot me :D. Some more sensitive people or rather the easily offended, are not happy with the kissing scenes so far. But I am intrigued even though Yuzu keeps doing stuff that just makes things worse...most of the time

Killing Bites

Synopsis : Killing Bites are underworld duels between human-animal hybrids.
One beast who knows no fear will fight in this animalistic world full of fear and insanity.

This ultimate battle of the beasts will shock you to your core!
Thoughts : For those looking for a bit more gore and sexy abs in their anime Killing Bites provides in spades! The human hybrid thing kind off reminded me of Terra Formars, but with a lot less cockroaches, and much better abs...just look at them!

Sora Yori mo Tooi Basho

Synopsis : Our first step was always curiosity. For unseen sights, unheard sounds, unsmelled scents, untouched textures, untasted tastes, and unfelt excitement. We travel to find the bits and pieces that we’d forgotten at some point. Howling at 40 degrees, going mad at 50 degrees, screaming at 60 degrees, to the primordial lands beyond the great oceans, at the edge of the earth, far removed from human civilization. This is the story of four girls who travel to the Antarctic, further even than outer space.
Thoughts : I love a good adventure anime, and Sora Yori mo Tooi Basho promises us just that! Quite a few laughs in the first few episodes thus far. I eagerly await the new episodes each week.

That concludes my top 5 picks of the season, though as the season progresses things change, some shows start slow, others start great and fall apart later on. So always fun to see which ends up being the best in the end. But don't worry here is information on the rest of the anime I'm interested in...

Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san : What an adorable anime about a girl teasing the guy she likes, it will be fun to see if their relationship ever progresses.

Yuru Camp : Slice of life and camping. Two things I enjoy! Yuru Camp brings them together in a very fun mix, and I'll be frank, it was very close to being a top pick for me.

Koi wa Ameagari no You ni : Noitamina shows rarely disappoint and this one about a high school girl that has a crush and a middle aged manager that has a child looks quite promising so far.

Death March kara Hajimaru Isekai Kyousoukyoku : The isekai genre is huge right now and Death March looks to be another great addition to it. Featuring a game developer suddenly find in a setting much like the games he made...it's quite interesting, especially his thoughts.

Marchen Madchen : Not exactly Isekai but close enough. Marchen Madchen could also be described as Harry Potter...with just girls and some yuri vibes...

Kokkoku : If you don't want something cute or funny, Kokkoku brings with it a grim world where people with the power to stop time do horrible things to each. Not for sensitive folk.

Beatless : This anime with battle android reminds me of some older anime I loved. Mahoromatic and Steel Angel Kurumi, but with less sweetness and more android battles! First episode was very enjoyable and action packed!

Toji no Miko : In a world where shrine maidens fight demonlike monsters with swords. There are bound to be some evil conspiracies. Toji no Miko seems promising so far at least...

Miira no Kaikata : What would you do if your dad sent you a cute mummy as a present? Welp I don't either but so far the first episode was fairly cute.

Hakumei to Mikochi : An anime about REALLY TINY PEOPLE living in a forest. First episode was okay. Remains to be seen if I'll stick to this anime or not.

Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens : A Crossdressing Assasin that is guarding the Detective he was supposed to kill makes for a weird combination, but so far it has me interested...

Takunomi : Country girl moves to the big city(Tokyo) to get a job, Obviously the best way to welcome her is with drinks! It seems this slice of life will have it's fair bit of information on alcoholic beverages.

Grancrest Senki : Magic! Lords! Demons! and a strange system involving Crests that determines ones ranking. So far it's pretty okay.

Slow Start : Some slice of life fun with quite a bit of lewd jokes, enjoyable so far. Especially as something to just watch and relax with.

Mitsuboshi Colors : The animation in this reminds me a lot of Ichigo Mashimaru, For now it's still fun to watch how the three girls "keep the peace" by toying with the officer.
Ryuuou no Oshigoto! : Another Shogi anime, but unlike 3-Gatsu no Lion, this one doesn't have a depressing theme. It does however have a bit of harem vibe and quite a few laughs so far.

Ramen Daisuki Koizumi-san : And lastly we have this. I like how the differences in ramen gets explained in detail and the running jokes so far are pretty fun.

And that concludes my first impressions of the winter 2018 anime season so far. All in all I see many of enjoyable anime to watch. But who knows what the future holds and heck I might even drop some of my top picks if shit goes sour. But that's life.

If you don't see a title on here I'm not following it. Thanks again for reading and please share your thoughts with me.

Anime Spotlight : The Best Anime of 2017

I know I know, we are a few weeks into 2018 already. Things got a bit hectic at work a lot sooner than I expected. But I finally got time to finish this list of the Top 5 anime from 2017.

2017 for me had some really fantastic anime, and quite a few average to poor ones. But I guess that can be said about any anime year so far...unless people are using nostalgia goggles ;)

Join me as I take I list the 5 anime I thought was the best 2017 had to offer.

Sangatsu no Lion

Synopsis : This is a gentle tale about people trying to regain something. And it is a tale of battle.

Kiriyama Rei had lost his family in an accident when he was young. Now he is a 17-year-old pro shogi player who is burdened with deep loneliness. Rei lives alone in an old town in Tokyo, but after becoming acquainted with three sisters, Akari, Hinata and Momo, he begins to change little by little...
Thoughts : March comes in like a lion is easily one of the best anime I have seen in a very long time. The amount of emotions this anime evokes from the watcher is beyond belief. March comes in like  a lion also has the perfect depection of what living with depression is like. But don't fret, this anime isn't all gloom and doom, in fact it also some of the most healing scenes you will see, outside Aria the Animation that is. I highly recommend this anime to ANY and ALL anime fans out there.

Made in Abyss

Synopsis : The enormous cave system, known as the Abyss, is the last unexplored place in the world. Nobody knows how deep down goes this titanic pit, inhabited by strange and wondrous creatures and full of mysterious ancient relics which purpose in unknown to modern man. Generations of bold adventurers have been drawn by the cryptic depths of the Abyss. In course of time those brave enough to explore the dangerous pit came to be known as Cave Raiders.

In Oosu, the town at the edge of the Abyss, there lives a little orphan named Rico, who dreams of becoming as great a cave raider as her mother was and solving the great mystery of the pit. One day exploring the murky depths she stumbles upon a little boy, who turns out to be a robot...
Thoughts : First off, if you didn't watch Made in Abyss, go drop everything you are doing and watch it and you'll see why it's one of the very few great anime this season. If you need more convincing well. Made in the Abyss has an amazing soundtrack, art style is a bit weird for sure, but the writing of the characters and the story is so good you'll forget about it after a very short while. And soon you will feel a connection with the characters. I'm not going to spoil anything but be sure to have some tissues ready when watching this Anime.

Little Witch Academia

Synopsis : Akko Kagari is an ordinary girl who joins the renowned witch academy for witch girls, Luna Nova Academy. When she was younger, she went to Magical Festa, a magic show hosted by a witch named Shiny Chariot. Akko was so mesmerized and inspired by Shiny Chariot's performance that she dreamed to someday be a "cool" witch like her. This young and impressionable Akko takes Shiny Chariot's words as her own motto: "Never forget, a believing heart is your magic.“ As part of a class, Akko and her classmates go into a labyrinth under the Tower of Luna Nova. There, a sealed ancient dragon was unleashed by one of her classmates. Akko tries to stop the dragon, but…
Thoughts : Little Witch Academia was everything I hoped for and more. Studio Trigger has once again outdone themselves in expanding the story of what was initially a one of short animation, It features just the right mix of fun, adventure, comedy and suspense. Let the colourful cast of Little Witch Academia entertain you.

Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon

Synopsis : Kobayashi is your average office worker who lives a boring life, alone in her small apartment, until she saves the life of a female dragon in distress. The dragon, named Tooru, has the ability to magically transform into an adorable human girl, albeit with horns and a long tail, and she will do anything to pay off her debt of gratitude, whether Kobayashi likes it or not. With a very persistent and amorous dragon as a roommate, nothing comes easy, and Kobayashi's normal life is about to go off the deep end.
Thoughts : I'm sure this comes as no surprise to you, Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon was a firm favorite this season. Featuring the funniest dragons this side of Slayers. Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon was one of the very few "dragon" anime that was actually really good. As it's usually not the case, Yes I'm looking at you Dragonaut, If you need to laughs or just want to have your heart melt at how sweet Kanna is. This is for you.

Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku o! 2

Synopsis : Following a tragic accident, the game-loving shut-in Satou Kazuma was reborn in a parallel world. Though his dream of enjoying a new life as an adventurer in an RPG-inspired world and striving to be a hero didn't come true, he managed to get by in his new world. He was joined by Aqua, the goddess who accompanied him to the parallel world; Megumin, an arch wizard who can only use her magic once a day; and Darkness, a crusader whose attacks always miss. And so, along with his party of girls who have extremely advanced powers but unfortunately can't take full advantage of them, he managed to complete some quests here and there.

Then, one day, after Kazuma's party saved the town of Axel from the mobile fortress Destroyer, a messenger from the capital came to tell Kazuma that he was suspected of the crime of subversion to the state! Where will the ordinary adventurer Kazuma's life in a parallel world lead him tomorrow?!
Thoughts : Another anime that needs no introduction, unless you've been living in a cave, Konosuba 2 kept all the fun and laughs the original had, but this time Aqua wasn't completely useless. Darkness and Megumin were still fan faves this season but I was glad they introduced some new characters. But if for some reason you have yet to watch the first season. DO IT NOW!

I'm pretty sure some of you reading this right now aren't agreeing with my list. Which is awesome as we all have different tastes. Feel free to share your top 5 anime of 2017 with me.

Anime Spotlight : The Best of Fall 2017 and the Rest

I hope everyone had a fantastic festive season and year end! The new year is upon us! I was away on vacation so had a fair bit of anime backlog to work through before I could even START on this writeup. But rejoice for it's here...kinda. Fall 2017 for me was a VERY enjoyable anime season which left me mostly smiling with the few exceptions here and there. As usual my criteria for shows to be talked about at the end of the season, are shows that finished in that season. So sadly this time 3 gatsu no lion, garo and mahoutsukai no yome won't be in the running for "best of".

Enough rambling let's get to the list!

Netojuu no Susume

Synopsis : After quitting her job, Morioka Moriko became a NEET and got addicted to an online game. In that game, even a wilting woman in her thirties like her can become a young, handsome guy and Moriko's new adventure as Hayashi began.
AniDB : http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=13345
Thoughts : No surprises here. I'm fairly certain everyone loved Net-Juu no Susume, Either that or they are crazy  ;)(just kidding) But a heartwarming tale with adults, fairly accurate portrayals of things that happen in games. And a bit too many coincidences...made for a very enjoyable show.

Ballroom e Youkoso

Synopsis : Feckless high school student Fujita Tatara wants to be good at something - anything. Unfortunately, he's about as average as a slouchy teen can be. The local bullies know this and make it a habit to hit him up for cash, but all that changes when the debonair Sengoku Kaname sends them packing. Sengoku's not the neighborhood watch, though. He's a professional ballroom dancer. And once Fujita Tatara gets pulled into the world of the ballroom, his life will never be the same.
Thoughts : A big thing I've always loved about Anime as a whole, is how sometimes people can make the most entertaining shows around topics I would normally not be interested in, like bread battles and boxing for example. In this case Ballroom dancing is the topic and other than the weird facial expressions from time to time. I have to admit Ballroom e Youkoso was a blast from start to finish. Yes the characters had very long necks but it was still worth every second I watched it.

Kujira no Kora wa Sajou ni Utau

Synopsis : Chakuro is the 14-year-old archivist of the Mud Whale, a nigh-utopian island that floats across the surface of an endless sea of sand. Nine in ten of the inhabitants of the Mud Whale have been blessed and cursed with the ability to use saimia, special powers that doom them to an early death. Chakuro and his friends have stumbled across other islands, but they have never met, seen, or even heard of a human who wasn't from their own. One day, Chakuro visits an island as large as the Mud Whale and meets a girl who will change his destiny.
Thoughts : I absolutely loved Children of the Sand Whales, even when it made me cry horribly. A fantastical setting with lively characters hid a very dark secret this show had plenty of cruel scenes. It seems the story does go on after the anime ends, I for one am hoping we get another season animated.

Inuyashiki

Synopsis : Inuyashiki Ichirou is down on his luck. While only 58 years old, his geriatric looks often have him written off as a pathetic old man by the world around him and he's constantly ignored and disrespected by his family despite all that he's done to support them. On top of everything else, his doctor has revealed that he has cancer and it appears that he has little time left in this world. But just when it seems things couldn't get any worse, a blinding light in the night sky strikes the earth where Ichirou stands. He later wakes up to find himself unscathed, but he soon starts to notice that there's something... different about himself. However, it turns out that these strange, new changes are just what Ichirou needs to take a new lease on life and now it seems like there's nothing to stop him from being a hero worthy of the respect that he never had before... unless, that is, there was someone else out there with these same changes...
Thoughts : I'm ecstatic to say that the Inuyashiki adaptation to anime went a lot better than Gantz did, and we weren't left with a very open end. Though some people weren't happy with how it ended. Inuyashiki was  a wild ride from start to finish, filling you with emotions of despair, horror as well as hope and joy.

Shokugeki no Souma: San no Sara

Synopsis : Yukihira Souma had been polishing his cooking skills while helping at his family's diner and one day, enters the elite cooking school, Totsuki Teahouse Culinary Academy. Souma met various other chefs at the academy and as he grew, he started searching for his own way of cooking.

With the curriculums that required the students to go help out at actual restaurants, Souma gained even more experience. With that, he was able to break through his old self and break through to a whole new taste for his dishes. He successfully completes his curriculum and grew even more.

After his training in the actual restaurant, Souma finally sees the top of Totsuki Academy, the Totsuki Elite Ten at the Momiji Meet and Greet and challenges them.

The venue that was decided for Souma and the Elite Ten to battle was the Totsuki school festival, the Moon Festival. What will Souma make happen at this monster event that brings in 500,000 ever year?

Meanwhile, someone's plan is coming together in the shadows. Souma's new battle was about to begin!
Thoughts : Admit it, you expected this to be on the list. If you don't know me by now I'm a huge fan of the Shokugeki no Soma franchise. Third season was really good, especially with all the twists. AND ERINA FINALLY FINDING OUT WHO SOMA'S DAD IS....ahem well Season 4 when?

And that's my list for the best 5 anime that ended with the fall 2017 season. Obviously your list would be different so please let me know which anime you loved most.

That being said the rest of the season wasn't bad either and it was actually quite hard to choose 5 titles...so here are my thoughts on the others.

Just Because! : For some really strange reason, some people think this anime is a AOTY contender...perhaps they are a tad masochistic as Just Because! was torture to watch and the way the end was done makes the it all feel like a waste of time.

Animegataris! : For the most part I really enjoyed Animegataris, it had a ton of fun references and some very interesting facts about the anime industry. That being said the last few episodes ruined the anime for me. As everything went out of whack..

Himouto Umaru-chan R : Umaru is always fun to watch, if you enjoyed the first season the second is well worth your time.

Konhana Kitan : This anime was super adorable, I really enjoyed the japanese mythology that permeated throughout it. Some of the episodes had a sad tone, also slight yuri ;)

Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou : Also known as Girls' Last Tour, this anime, even though slowly paced, was relaxing yet stressful and depressing to watch. That being said I'm glad I watched it.

Imouto sae Ireba Ii : I'll admit the first episode's start gave me a completely wrong impression what this anime would be about. I also believe that it caused a fair bit of people to drop the show. Which is a big shame. A Little Sister is All You Need is ironically not an incest anime, but quite and intriguing anime about very peculiar light novel authors and their lives. Maybe give it a second chance?

Shoukoku no Altair : Set in a fantasy setting that has a very ancient middle eastern feel to it, I was initially unsure if I would enjoy Shoukoku no Altair, but thanks to the Arslan Senki vibes I got from it, I stuck with it and I'm very glad I did!

Kino no Tabi 2017 : Even though it was just a remake of the old Kino no Tabi, and some people said it wasn't as "gritty" as the original I still thoroughly enjoyed it. Well worth watching.

Houseki no Kuni : Initially I was quite unsure about this anime. but it grew on me in a good way. And now I'm here awaiting the announcement of a possible second season...

Youkai Apartment no Yuuga na Nichijou : Even though Youkai Apartment has a lot of flaws, I do believe it's a fun, light watch. For when you want something to watch that has just enough action and comedy to keep you interested.

Kekkai Sensen and Beyond : The second season of Kekkai Sensen was a BLAST, in more ways than one. Sadly the OP and ED wasn't as good as the first season, and it didn't have a central story arc. Other than the last two episodes that is...

Blend S : I loved Blend S at the beginning, it had me in stitches for the most part. But it kinda fell a bit flat comedy wise nearing the end. It did spawn a plethora of memes though.

Wake Up, Girls Shin Shou : Personally I find WUG to be the superior Idol anime this season. Far better girls and music. And a bit more realistic look at the idol and entertainment industry.

Fate Apocrypha : So far my least fave installment in the Fate series. It didn't help that at times the pacing was a bit off. Sure it has pretty good action scenes and some good characters that made the watch worth it, and it does come together a lot better in the second half of the anime. Just a shame Astolfo didn't die earlier..

Any other anime not mentioned here that finished with Fall 2017, I definitely didn't watch. Please share your thoughts about the season with me in the comments here or on social media. Always love seeing what other people think.
