The Best Anime from Spring 2017 and the rest

I know, I know...Spring 2017 ended a few weeks ago...it took quite a bit of time to decide on which of the many anime I watched from the previous season was the best.  That and being bombarded with all the new shows from the Summer 2017 season. On which I'll do a post as soon as everything has aired. As usual what follows is a list of Anime I think were the best from Spring 2017, followed by my thoughts on the rest of the anime that finished. Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below, or on facebook/twitter.

Seikai Suru Kado

Synopsis : Shindou Koujirou is a highly-skilled negotiator working for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. As his plane at Haneda airport prepares to take off, a huge mysterious cube appears from the sky. "It" expands rapidly, and absorbs the passenger plane and its 252 passengers.

The cube's name is "Kado".

A strange being called Yaha-kui Zashunina appears from within Kado and tries to make contact with humanity. Shindou, who was been absorbed by Kado, ends up taking on the role of mediator between Yaha-kui zaShunina and humanity. The Japanese government sends its own negotiator, Tsukai Saraka. Who is Yaha-kui zaShunina? What does he want?
Thoughts : I'll admit the first few episodes of Kado left my quite confused. But this was the first anime in a very long time to really surprise me on almost every episode. I loved how they focused on a premise not really used much these days.  The characters were really well thought out, the animation was on point and the music was stellar. A must see if you haven't already

Fukumenkei Noise

Synopsis : The anime tells a romance story with the themes of "music x one-sided love." Nino, a girl who loves singing, made a childhood promise with her first crush Momo and song-composing Yuzu to someday find her voice. The three went their separate ways, but Nino kept her promise and continued to sing. Years later, the three are now high school students, and Nino is drawn into the world of band clubs.
Thoughts :  I'm sure some of you expected me to mention Fukumenkei Noise on this list. Even though it initially gave me Nana vibes, it wasn't just a highschool "poormans" clone of Nana, Luckily it evolved into something completely different. The last concert scene was amazingly well done. I really enjoyed the raw depiction of emotions in this anime, even though some of the characters were annoyingly stupid...still well worth the watch if you are looking for some drama.

Little Witch Academia

Synopsis : Akko Kagari is an ordinary girl who joins the renowned witch academy for witch girls, Luna Nova Academy. When she was younger, she went to Magical Festa, a magic show hosted by a witch named Shiny Chariot. Akko was so mesmerized and inspired by Shiny Chariot's performance that she dreamed to someday be a "cool" witch like her. This young and impressionable Akko takes Shiny Chariot's words as her own motto: "Never forget, a believing heart is your magic.“ As part of a class, Akko and her classmates go into a labyrinth under the Tower of Luna Nova. There, a sealed ancient dragon was unleashed by one of her classmates. Akko tries to stop the dragon, but…
Thoughts : Little Witch Academia was everything I hoped for and more. Studio Trigger has once again outdone themselves in expanding the story of what was initially a one of short animation, It features just the right mix of fun, adventure, comedy and suspense. Let the colourful cast of Little Witch Academia entertain you.

Yowamushi Pedal: New Generation

Synopsis : With the team's combined strength, the Sohoku High bicycle racing club beat reigning champions Hakone Academy at the Interhigh national race and achieved an impressive overall victory. Now that their hot summer has ended and third-years Kinjou, Makishima, and Tadokoro have retired from the team, first-year participants in the Interhigh Onoda Sakamichi, Imaizumi Shunsuke, and Naruko Shoukichi, along with their new captain second-year Teshima Junta and vice-captain Aoyagi Hajime begin preparing as a "new team" for their second consecutive championship at the next Interhigh.
Thoughts : Yowamushi Pedal : New Generation still shows that the Yowamushi Pedal series has no sign of losing steam. Starting quite early with the new InterHigh cycling competition with tons of new characters. My only misgiving is the season was a bit short. That being said Yowamushi Pedal is a fantastic sports anime that is well worth your time.

Zero kara Hajimeru Mahou no Sho

Synopsis : The grimoire fantasy series follows a witch named Zero who is ignorant of the world and a half-beast half-human mercenary who longs to be human. Witches who practice sorcery exist in the world, however, in this era no one knows how about the art and study of witchcraft. Zero is going on a journey to search for a magical tome called The Book of Zero that hides a power that can destroy the world. The mercenary travels with her as her guard.
Thoughts : Zero kara Hajimeru Mahou no Sho gave me everything I wanted in a fantasy anime and more. Not all of the characters you meet in the anime are what they seem at first. Fanservice was kept to a minimum and I did enjoy how much focus was put into the world of Zero kara Hajimeru Mahou no Sho. I highly recommend it.

And now on to "the rest". Do note that some shows didn't make the list as they are still airing. like Boku no Hero Academy 2. And just because some were mentioned above, doesn't make them bad. Read on to find out why they didn't make the cut.

Granblue Fantasy the Animation : This was an anime I thoroughly enjoyed. Even though I have never played the game it is  based on, which also left me utterly confused in the last episode when they just swopped the main character out and "rewrote" the story. I did later do some research as to what was  going on, but still it was a pretty dick move to do.

ID-0 : ID-0 is one of those Scifi stories you just can't help but enjoy. Even though it's nothing great. It is at the very least entertaining. A shame as I do feel they could have fleshed it out a bit more.

DanMachi Gaiden Sword Oratoria : The Spinoff to the highly popular DanMachi. I quite enjoyed the anime, especially as it filled up a lot of holes left by the original anime and gave a lot more character development on characters that were in the main story, but didn't get too much screentime. Luckily Hestia has very little screentime in the spinoff. Remember Hestia is wurst grill.

Kenka Banchou Otome : This anime had a stupidly weird premise, but it was entertaining at least. Though I can't say I approve of how the story unfolded or how the characters treat each other...

Hinako Note : Cute girls do stage plays! That's pretty much it, the show is cute with funny moments. Not the best example of it's sort but not terrible.

Eromanga-Sensei : I'll be blunt, I honestly enjoyed Oreimo a lot more than this. Yes it has it's moments, But sagiri just isn't cute.

Berserk 2017 : I so wish they would stop with the horrible animation on Berserk, a lot better story arc than in Berserk 2016 ruined by subpar animation and horrible cgi.

Clockwork Planet : Clockwork Planet was actually quite good. And if it wasn't for Yowamushi Pedal it most probably would have made the cut for the best of the season.

Frame Arms Girl : Wasn't exactly the Angelic Layer meets Busou Shinki I hoped for. But it was fun. except for the weird hot springs fanservice episode were all the toys were had no joints for some reason.

Attack on Titan 2 : Oh yes I'm using the "incorrect" english name and I don't really care. The second season went in the route exactly I was fearing this show would go in from the first season. It's no secret that I'm not a fan of the franchise. The premise to me seems stupid to be frank. Though I'm most probably going to get hate for that.

Alice to Zouroku : If you want to get lost in a fantastic setting where magic is real and things happen that you could only imagine. Alice to Zouroku is definitely for you. Though some episode do feel a bit disjointed as there doesn't seem to be a single story being followed. I kind of expected the "evil" government conspiracy to continue but it just kind of vanished.

Uchouten Kazoku 2 : Was everything I hoped for and more. Continuing the setting and tales from the brilliant first season. A must see look into the lives of Tanuki, Tengu and Humans in Kyoto...obviously based on mythology and fantasy.

Oushitsu Kyoushi Haine : What is it about anime with mysterious teacher type characters and trouble students? They almost always end up being enjoyable to watch. Even though Oushitsu Kyoushi Haine features mostly bishounen. I am happy to report that there are almost no Yaoi undertones...though I'm sure that won't stop fujoshi from shipping anything and everything.

Saenai Heroine no Sodatekata Flat : Saekano season 2 was partly a joy to watch, but also hard emotionally. There were a lot of events in the second season that does not  bode well with ones heart, but still highly worth the watch.

Busou Shoujo Machiavellianism : Busou Shoujo Machiavellianism had quite a bit of fanservice(not that I'm complaining) and a fun mix of comedy and martial arts action. If you want to watch something where you can just switch off your brain and enjoy, this would be it.

Rokudenashi Majutsu Koushi to Akashic Records : Another anime with a mysterious teacher. This time the teacher is the "problem child" and the students are mostly good. Parts of the anime reminded me of Gate, especially with how Glenn was revealed to be a lot higher spec than he was initially presented to be. Which is something that also happened with Itami in Gate. Either way this anime features a fair amount of conspiracies, cute girls, magical battles, bloodshed and fanservice. Go ahead....I know you want to watch it.

Shuumatsu Nani Shitemasuka Isogashii Desuka Sukutte Moratte Ii Desuka :

And that wraps up my thoughts on the Spring 2017 season. All in all a pretty good season of anime. Which so far seems a whole lot better than what Summer 2017 is going to be.

Promising New Anime from Spring 2017

The spring 2017 anime season is in full swing and even though there is a multitude of long awaited sequels(Boku no Hero Academia, Uchouten Kazoku and Saekano to name a few) and a spinoff(Sword Oratoria) I'm once again making a list of the NEW anime out there that is well worth your time to watch. Keeping in mind that this list of anime is in no way a representation of the "best anime of the season" in any way, shape or form. With that behind us let's dig in!

Thoughts :  Fukumenkei Noise gave me instant "Nana" vibes even though it's not nearly as dramatic, and the music isn't on nearly the same level. From the first four episodes I've seen I can see that this anime has quite a bit of promise, though shoujo romance isn't for everyone.

Roku de Nashi Majutsu Koushi to Akashic Records

Synopsis : The Alzano Imperial Magic Academy is located in the southern part of the Alzano Empire, and is among most prominent magic schools in the world, where students can learn the highest forms of magic. All those who strive to learn magic dream of studying at this academy, and its students as well as its teachers are proud to be a part of its 400-year history. Glenn Radars is a new instructor who has suddenly been appointed to teach part-time at this highly respected academy. The previously unheard-of lessons of this man known as a good-for-nothing bastard are about to begin.
Thoughts : Make no mistake, Roku de Nashi Majutsu Koushi to Akashic Records isn't a "fresh" concept, or one that hasn't been almost done to death already. But even though it is predictable it is still fun to watch.

Thoughts : KADO : The Right Answer is still taking me by surprise with every episode. I was initially unsure what this anime was about to be honest. But things are starting to fall into place and I'll be honest. I like what I'm seeing :D

Thoughts : Everyone loves a good adventure set in a fantasy world right? Well okay...everyone excluding boring people. Grimoire of Zero luckily has no relation to "zero no tsukaima" and it's all the better for it, though be warned it might include a certain skyrim joke.

Re-Creators

Synopsis : People have created many stories. Joy, sadness, anger, deep emotion. Stories stir up emotion and captivate. However, those emotions are nothing more than the feelings of a spectator. What if the characters in the stories had their own will. In their eyes, are we, the creators of the stories, like gods? Revolution for our world. Punishment for the land of the gods. Re:CREATORS. Everyone becomes a Creator.
Thoughts : Re-Creators puts a spin on the whole Average guy gets transported to magical world and becomes a hero trope by making an average guy's life get invaded by Heroes! Or rather fictional characters. I'm enjoying Re-Creators so far, though I have a fair idea on what's really going on here..

Eromanga-sensei

Synopsis : Izumi Masamune is a high school student who loves writing light novels. Having no artistic skill himself, Masamune always gets his novels illustrated by an anonymous partner using the pen name Eromanga Sensei who, like the name suggests, draws questionably perverted images despite being extremely reliable. In addition to balancing his passion and school, Masamune is also stuck with taking care of his only family member, his younger sister Izumi Sagiri. A hikikomori by nature, Sagiri shut herself in her room for over a year and constantly bosses Masamune around despite his attempts to get her to leave her room. However, when Masamune inadvertently discovers that his anonymous partner has been Sagiri all along, their sibling relationship quickly leaps to new levels of excitement, especially when a beautiful best-selling shoujo mangaka enters the fray.
Thoughts : First things first. Kanna > Sagiri. With that out of the way Eromanga-sensei so far has provided viewers with a lot of laughs and what I also really enjoyed is how accurate the depiction of streaming artists are. On the why they do it and the joy they get from it part. Not the cute girls drawing lewd things part.

This is just a short list of promising new anime form the season. Which shows are you following each week? For a full list of Anime I'm currently following, though some might get dropped in future.. See below!

Best of Winter 2017 Anime Season and the Rest. Full Season Wrap-up Write up!

It's a bit later than usual, but I've finally finished watching all the Anime I followed from the Winter 2017 anime season! As Always I will list the anime I think deserves to be the Top 5 of the Season, this only includes shows that ENDED in the Winter 2017 season, so leftovers from 2016 may be included. Will also do a writeup of the rest of the shows I've watched so you can decide if it's worth your time to watch or not.

Strap yourselves in because it's going to be quite the ride. Winter 2017 had some REALLY good anime, and some surprising gems. I'll come out and say it now I personally didn't enjoy Kemono Friends so it won't be on here at all.

Sangatsu no Lion

Synopsis : This is a gentle tale about people trying to regain something. And it is a tale of battle.

Kiriyama Rei had lost his family in an accident when he was young. Now he is a 17-year-old pro shogi player who is burdened with deep loneliness. Rei lives alone in an old town in Tokyo, but after becoming acquainted with three sisters, Akari, Hinata and Momo, he begins to change little by little...
Thoughts : March comes in like a lion is easily one of the best anime I have seen in a very long time. The amount of emotions this anime evokes from the watcher is beyond belief. March comes in like  a lion also has the perfect depection of what living with depression is like. But don't fret, this anime isn't all gloom and doom, in fact it also some of the most healing scenes you will see, outside Aria the Animation that is. I highly recommend this anime to ANY and ALL anime fans out there.

Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon

Synopsis : Kobayashi is your average office worker who lives a boring life, alone in her small apartment, until she saves the life of a female dragon in distress. The dragon, named Tooru, has the ability to magically transform into an adorable human girl, albeit with horns and a long tail, and she will do anything to pay off her debt of gratitude, whether Kobayashi likes it or not. With a very persistent and amorous dragon as a roommate, nothing comes easy, and Kobayashi's normal life is about to go off the deep end.
Thoughts : I'm sure this comes as no surprise to you, Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon was a firm favorite this season. Featuring the funniest dragons this side of Slayers. Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon was one of the very few "dragon" anime that was actually really good. As it's usually not the case, Yes I'm looking at you Dragonaut, If you need to laughs or just want to have your heart melt at how sweet Kanna is. This is for you.

Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku o! 2

Synopsis : Following a tragic accident, the game-loving shut-in Satou Kazuma was reborn in a parallel world. Though his dream of enjoying a new life as an adventurer in an RPG-inspired world and striving to be a hero didn't come true, he managed to get by in his new world. He was joined by Aqua, the goddess who accompanied him to the parallel world; Megumin, an arch wizard who can only use her magic once a day; and Darkness, a crusader whose attacks always miss. And so, along with his party of girls who have extremely advanced powers but unfortunately can't take full advantage of them, he managed to complete some quests here and there.

Then, one day, after Kazuma's party saved the town of Axel from the mobile fortress Destroyer, a messenger from the capital came to tell Kazuma that he was suspected of the crime of subversion to the state! Where will the ordinary adventurer Kazuma's life in a parallel world lead him tomorrow?!
Thoughts : Another anime that needs no introduction, unless you've been living in a cave, Konosuba 2 kept all the fun and laughs the original had, but this time Aqua wasn't completely useless. Darkness and Megumin were still fan faves this season but I was glad they introduced some new characters. But if for some reason you have yet to watch the first season. DO IT NOW!

ACCA 13-ku Kansatsu-ka

Synopsis : The kingdom of Dowa, which is subdivided into 13 states, is celebrating its monarch's 99th birthday. These 13 states have many agencies that are controlled by the giant organization known as ACCA. Within ACCA, Jean Otus is the second-in-command of the inspection agency. His agency has ten people placed in each of the 13 states, with a central office in the capital city. They keep track of all the activities of ACCA across the kingdom, and keep data on each state's ACCA office flowing toward the central office. Jean also often has business trips from the capital to the other districts to check on the situation and personnel there.
Thoughts : Revolutions, assasinations, conspiracies, cute girls that like bread. ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Dept.has it all and it also features a very well written story filled with intriguing characters. This anime has most probably slipped below the radar for the majority of Anime fans. But no fear. Reef is here to share this secret with you.

Youjo Senki

Synopsis : The anime centers on a young girl who fights on the frontlines in war. She has blonde hair, blue eyes, and nearly transparent white skin, and she flies through the air and mercilessly strikes down her opponents. Her name is Tanya Degurechaff, and she speaks with a young girl's lisp and commands the army. Tanya used to be one of Japan's elite office workers, but because of a wrathful god, was reborn as a little girl. Tanya prioritizes optimization and career advancement above all, and she will become the most dangerous entity among the Imperial Army's sorcerers.
Thoughts : An Atheist Salaryman forced to be reborn as a girl in a fantasy world at war? Sign me up! Tanya the Evil really used visuals and audio to bring forward the grim realities of war. Make no mistake this anime isn't about "cute girl doing things" far from it! Season 2 when?!

That's my shortlist of the "best" anime from Winter 2017 now onto the "rest" and by rest I don't mean bad, Although some were quite terrible....

Kuzu no Honkai : Is a really good Romance/Drama anime with a very realistic approach to relationships in Japan, it can be a bit much for some people and the theme is VERY mature so don't be surprised by the sex scenes. It is well worth the watch though.

ReWrite Season 2 : Wraps up the ReWrite anime adaptation of the Key Visual Arts VN. That being said it's probably the worst Key Visual Arts I have EVER watched and I recommend you don't waste your time with this or the First season.

Chaos;Child : Did a really good job of taking the world created in Chaos;Head and building upon it. I'll admit I was taken by surprise quite a few times from the plot twists and turns.

Schoolgirl Strikers - Animation Channel : I initially thought SGS would just be your run of the mill high school girls fighting monsters anime. and for the most part it is. But the characters were interesting enough to keep it "fresh".

Idol Jihen : Let's face it, it's not the best of shows but the girls are cute and it is fun to watch. Sadly it doesn't really go anywhere. But you still get to see Idols doing politics.

Nyanko Days : Short, Adorable, Cute, CATS!!!

Masamune-kun no Revenge : A promising rom-com that was only let down by it's end. Though I do understand that the manga isn't completed yet so I guess it was to be expected that things would end mid air.

Urara Meirochou : A super cute anime filled with a bit of the occult. It does feature slight fanservice but noting on the level of say "to Love ru". Well worth the watch you need a smile.

Seiren : Much like Amagami, feature different short "arcs" for each girl. I quite enjoyed watching Seiren to be honest, though I'll admit it's average at best.

eLDLive : This was a bit of a surprise, I half expected I'd drop it after the first episode, but it turns out it was a lot more interesting and fun to watch than initially thought. I'm kind of surprised it wasn't more popular.

Akiba's Trip The Animation : Was EXACTLY as I exptected it to be. As someone who enjoyed the game it's based on this was a treat to watch.

Gabriel DropOut : A VERY cute and hilarious anime about two angels and two demons getting along, to an extent, in a normal human highschool. Also Gabs depection as an mmo addict was pretty spot on!

Minami Kamakura Koukou Joshi Jitensha-bu : I'll be honest, as a fan of cycling anime. I did expect a bit more from this one. If all female cycling anime is what you want I suggest rather watching Long Riders.

Demi-chan wa Kataritai : LOVED this anime. All the girls were adorable but Sakki is the best...by far! Also goes to show you don't always need a lot of fanservice to make something like this work!

Ao no Exorcist - Kyoto Fujouou-hen : Finally we got more Blue Exorcist, and I'm honestly glad to see how they went around resolving the issue between Rin and the other trainees.

But these are just my thoughts, How did you feel about the anime from the Winter 2017 Season? Which anime did you wait for EVERY week?

What Anime to watch from the Winter 2017 Season

The Winter 2017 Anime season is in full swing, and I'm glad to report that there are a ton of really good sequels this season! But fans of those shows probably already know it. The thing people are really curious about is which of the new Anime they should watch. Personally I feel that a lot of the new anime are...just okay. Not great, not terrible, just okay. Luckily there are a few good ones, which is the purpose of this post. And a few downright horrid anime as well...here's looking at you Spiripact and Handshakers. Keep in mind this is not a list of the "best shows from winter 2017" just a list of which of the new anime(not sequel or spinoff) are worth watching this season.

Kuzu no Honkai

Synopsis : 17-year-old Awaya Mugi and Yasuraoka Hanabi appear to be the ideal couple. They are both pretty popular, and they seem to suit each other well. However, outsiders don't know of the secret they share. Both Mugi and Hanabi have hopeless crushes on someone else, and they are only dating each other to soothe their loneliness. Mugi is in love with Minagawa Akane, a young teacher who used to be his home tutor. Hanabi is also in love with a teacher, Kanai Narumi, a young man who has been a family friend since she was little. In each other, they find a place where they can grieve for the ones they cannot have, and they share a loneliness-driven physical intimacy. Will things stay like this for them forever?
Thoughts : Scum's Wish (Kuzu no Honkai) is most probably going to be the drama of the season, unlike Fuuka. Kuzu no Honkai has an extremely complicated relationship dynamic going on and Tears will be had!

ACCA 13-ku Kansatsu-ka

Synopsis : The kingdom of Dowa, which is subdivided into 13 states, is celebrating its monarch's 99th birthday. These 13 states have many agencies that are controlled by the giant organization known as ACCA. Within ACCA, Jean Otis is the second-in-command of the inspection agency.
Thoughts : ACCA 13 is kind of the dark horse this season, It doesn't feature amazing animation and isn't talked about much. But has one of the more interesting settings and plots this season. It is probably not going to appeal to most people though.

Masamune-kun no Revenge

Synopsis : As an overweight child, Makabe Masamune was mercilessly teased and bullied by one particular girl, Adagaki Aki. Determined to one day exact his revenge upon her, Makabe begins a rigorous regimen of self-improvement and personal transformation.
Years later, Masamune re-emerges as a new man. Handsome, popular, with perfect grades and good at sports, Masamune-kun transfers to Aki's school, and is unrecognizable to her. Now, Masamune-kun is ready to confront the girl who bullied him so many years ago and humiliate her at last. But will revenge be as sweet as he thought?
Thoughts : Masamune-kun no Revenge is a light hearted romance comedy with a slight spin on things. It is fairly predictable as the main character is dense in a few ways. Except when things get changed up a bit to keep people interested. Also there seems to be a possible romance triangle developing.

Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon

Synopsis : Kobayashi is your average office worker who lives a boring life, alone in her small apartment, until she saves the life of a female dragon in distress. The dragon, named Thor, has the ability to magically transform into an adorable human girl, albeit with horns and a long tail, and she will do anything to pay off her debt of gratitude, whether Kobayashi likes it or not. With a very persistent and amorous dragon as a roommate, nothing comes easy, and Kobayashi's normal life is about to go off the deep end.
Thoughts : Miss Kobayashi`s Dragon Maid is luckily one of the few anime feature Dragons that isn't terrible. In fact so far it has been quite fun to watch, though it wouldn't be fair to say that the Dragons are acting in a expected dragon fashion. So far the anime has been quite heartwarming and a lot of laughs.

Demi-chan wa Kataritai

Synopsis : Ajin, also known as demi-humans or simply Demi, have lived alongside humans for ages under persecution. However, in recent years, they have become accepted as regular members of society.

Takahashi Tetsuo is a biology teacher who has been always interested in demi-humans but never had a chance to meet them. However, in his fourth year of working at Shibasaki High School he starts teaching Takanashi Hikari, a highly-energetic vampire and lover of tomato juice; Machi Kyouko, a shy dullahan who has trouble socializing; and Kusakabe Yuki, a yukionna who avoids people because she is afraid that she might hurt others with her powers. Moreover, the school employs math teacher Satou Sakie, a succubus who constantly suppresses her seductive ability and has zero experience with men.

As Takahashi interacts with demi-humans, he learns more interesting facts about them and helps them solve their problems.
Thoughts : Demi-chan wa Kataritai is delightfully entertaining anime about a seemingly oblivious teacher and the focus of his interests, the demi-humans, or demi-chan's as they prefer to be called. The anime features a bit of a harem feel to it, but everything thus far has been quite pure and light hearted.

Akko tries to stop the dragon, but…
Thoughts : Finally! After Studio Trigger released the original Little Witch Academia animation in 2013 we have the tv series everyone was waiting for. Most probably one of the few new shows that can compete with the sequels this year.

Obviously tastes are subjective, but luckily I'm fairly open to hearing what other people think, which of the new anime do you feel is good this season? Personally I feel that this season is going to be carried by the sequels and leftover shows from 2016 as the majority of new anime all seem a bit mediocre.

Best 5 Anime from 2016

The 2017 Winter anime season is starting up, but before we get into it! It's time to see which 5 anime from the many good shows of 2016 are the Top 5 Anime. Some difficult choices had to be made, but if your pick isn't on the list. Let me know!

Re: Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu

Synopsis : Natsuki Subaru is an ordinary high school student who is lost in an alternate world, where he is rescued by a beautiful, silver-haired girl. He stays near her to return the favour, but the destiny she is burdened with is more than Subaru can imagine. Enemies attack one by one, and both of them are killed. He then finds out he has the power to rewind death, back to the time he first came to this world. But only he remembers what has happened since.
Thoughts : Re: Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu feels like the love child of KonoSuba and All You need is Kill. A funny, gory, fantasy setting anime with some edge of your seat scenes, initially. Later on Re Zero had some extremely cruel scenes and as a viewer you even end up hating Subaru for a while. Great voice acting and characters really made this well worth the watch.

           Sakamoto Desu ga?

Synopsis : The story follows the daily life of the "coolest" high school student, Sakamoto. As soon as he transfers to his new school, he attracts the attention of not just his class but the whole student body, and his jealous classmates' attempts to bully him repeatedly backfire and instead make Sakamoto look cooler.
Thoughts : If laughter is what you need. Sakamoto Desu ga? Has it in spades. Sakamoto Desu ga? never managed to not surprise me in some random way. Great visuals, good jokes and interesting cast of characters make for a fun watch. One could complain that there wasn't any "character development" or main plot line. But trust me, Sakamoto Desu ga? more than makes up for that with humor.

Boku dake ga Inai Machi

Synopsis : Fujinuma Satoru is a struggling manga artist who has the ability to turn back time and prevent deaths. When his mother is killed he turns back time to solve the mystery, but ends up back in elementary school, just before the disappearance of his classmate Hinazuki Kayo.
Thoughts : Boku dake ga Inai Machi, also known as ERASED, was generally good throughout it's running. It had an interesting premise, even though the mystery was a bit easy to figure out, it still kept me entertained. Strong emotions pulse through the veins of ERASED as you follow Satoru's hard battle to change the past so he can save his future.

Hai to Gensou no Grimgar

Synopsis : When Haruhiro awakens, he's in the dark. He doesn't know where he is, why he is here, and where he came from. Around him there are several men and women who have the same circumstances. Haruhiro and his companions find themselves in a game-like world called Grimgar and must form a party, cooperate, and learn new skills to survive the harsh environment together.
Thoughts : While KonoSuba was easily the funnier of the "stuck in a fantasy world" anime this season. Grimgar had the far bigger impact. Both emotionally and visually. Even though Grimgar features some fanservice, it's not over the top. The choice of music really matched the dark theme of Grimgar well. And with the battles always being life and death, the last few episodes were quite rough.

Durarara!!x2 Ketsu

Synopsis : Half a year after the turmoil that rocked the entire city of Ikebukuro - Peace has once again returned to the city and people are living each day normally. The high school students enjoy their days of youth as the strongest and most dangerous man of Ikebukuro works diligently. The informant plots (or plans) a new scheme and the headless rider is pursued by the cops as she rides through the night... But soon this normal will be cut short by the abnormal. Slowly but surely, the unknown will seize the city and face an all new storm.
Thoughts : Durarara!!x2 finally comes to a close with Ketsu. A great big cast of unique characters big enough to fill a theater with outstanding animation and music. Some really great dark humor and a tinge of romance. Makes for an unforgettable Anime experience in Durarara!!x2 Ketsu.

And that concludes the list, I know quite a few "expected" titles in there, but I'm sure you are also surprised as to why some are missing ;) Let's hope 2017 is filled with great anime!
