Building my own UDS (Ugly Drum Smoker) : The Road to #ReefsMeat

If you are like me, you absolutely love good smoked meat, but smokers are generally quite expensive to buy. so the obvious next step is to build your own!

First off though you'll need a few things :
210l Used Oil Drum, if you can find one with an open top even better, if not you'll have to do a bit of cutting but it isn't a big issue. Just make sure it has no inner lining.
57cm Charcoal Grill
18.5" weber charcoal grate or if you are can make one out of expanded metal
2 Pieces of Expanded Metal in the following size 30cm x 60cm
Some Highheat paint.
3 3/4" Steel Nipples
2 3/4" Steel Caps
3/4 Ballvalve
A temperature gauge, the Jetmaster ones work quite well.
A handle for the lid
Assorted nuts and bolts

Now on to prepping the old Oil drums before they can become smokers.
You'll notice they still have Oil residue left in them
The fastest way to get rid of the Oil residue is to burn it out. I suggest doing this in a fairly open area with a fire extinguisher in hand as oil fires can get out of hand.
All the car oil residue is gone, if you are afraid of rust on the inside you can give it a coating of cooking oil for now.
Next step is removing the old paint
I used paint stripper first
And then used a steelbrush tip on a drill to get all the excess paint off.
Next step was to paint the drums with the high heat paint to prevent them from rusting.
One the drums are painted, assemble the charcoal basket by bending the Expanded metal sheets into two half moons and then attaching them to each other and the 18,5" charcoal grate. I used wire to do this, but if you are handy with a welder you can always weld them together. I also made a handle with wire to help get the charcoal basket in and out of the drum without hassle.
Next I drilled some holes and added the handle to the lid.
Here you can see the charcoal basket fits easily inside the drum, and you'll also see the nuts and bolts I'm using to hold the 57cm grill in place.
I drilled out three 25mm holes using a steel cutting drill bit for the three 3/4" steel nipples, I attached the two steel caps and ballvalve on the nipples. Last step is to just drill a hole slightly undernear where the 57cm grill comes and install the temperature gauge there.

I later added a 42cm ash catchpan underneath the charcoal basket to make cleaning easier. After assebly is done, the first thing you want to do is season the UDS or give it a dry run.

Essentially you start up a fire with wood chips and charcoal mixed in the charcoal basket so you can test if the smoker works right before possibly wasting any meat. And you also give it a bit of flavoring,

Once all that is done you are ready to smoke your meat!
If you have fine wood shavings or wood chips  I suggest using small tinfoil pans covered in tinfoil with holes to hold the wood chips in between the charcoal. Otherwise the wood chips burn out too quickly.
My UDS in action
And the end result, pork shoulder smoked with cherry wood for 8 hours at 120C in my UDS, we pulled the bone clean out. After this our hands got a bit too sticky to use the camera.

But there you go, if someone like me with absolutely no DIY skills can build one, so can you. If you are looking for the dry rub and basting sauce recipe I used feel free to ask in the comments. I'll share it here if enough people are interested.

Spring 2015 Anime I'm looking forward to MOST

The Spring 2015 Anime season is in full swing and after giving most of the shows a watch here are the shows I'm most looking forward to from the Spring 2015 Anime season. The list will contain shows that aren't sequels of other anime. Even though I would love to punt Baby Steps 2, Knights of Sidonia 2 and the new Nanoha...

Shokugeki no Soma

Synopsis : Yukihira Souma is a middle school student who is determined to surpass his father's culinary skills. One day, his father decides to close down their family restaurant and hone his skills in Europe. Before leaving he enrolls Souma in an elite culinary school that is extremely difficult to enter with a graduation rate of only 10 percent. Will Souma be able to improve his skills, or will the kitchen prove to be too hot?
Tags : comedy, cooking, ecchi, manga, school life, shounen
Thoughts : If you were expecting another heartwarming and fluffy cooking anime like Koufuku Graffiti then you are in for a surprise! Food Wars! is the name of the game here. Been looking forward to a comedy driven cooking show since Yaketate Japan.

Ore Monogatari

Synopsis : Gouda Takeo is a giant guy with a giant heart. Too bad the girls don't want him! (They want his good-looking best friend, Sunakawa.) Used to being on the sidelines, Takeo simply stands tall and accepts his fate. But one day when he saves a girl named Yamato from a harasser on the train, his (love!) life suddenly takes an incredible turn!
Tags : manga, shoujo
Thoughts : I'll admit I'm a sucker for these kind of romance anime. Humour in this show is great so far, and Takeo is more than a bit dense but it's fun watching Yamato try her best to get his attention.

Dungeon ni Deai o Motomeru no wa Machigatte Iru Darouka
Synopsis : The story takes place in the town of labyrinths, Orario, also called "Dungeon." Vel Clanel is a newbie adventurer that admires "Having a fateful meeting with a person of the opposite gender." One day during an adventure, he is attacked by a Minotaur. Close to destruction, he is saved by a top-class female adventurer, Eyes Warenstein. He falls in love with her at first sight, and begins actions to become an adventurer that is on her level. He later encounters Hestia, a god called a "Lolita god" due to her stature who falls in love with him.
Tags : action, adventure, deity, fantasy, novel, romance
Thoughts : DanMachi (no I'm not typing that entire name out) has a strong start where the viewer is instantly presented with a scene of the protag in danger and subsequently saved by a strong female warrior. The show has a lot of promise and has been interesting so far. Also Hestia isn't best girl.

Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches

Synopsis : One day, high-school boy Yamada bumps into the beautiful girl Shiraishi on the stairs (literally), and their lips touch as they fall. When they regain their wits, they realize that they have swapped bodies. As time progresses, the two realize that this is not the only mysterious happening in the school.
Tags : manga, shounen
Thoughts : I've been looking forward to Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches, ever since my friends couldn't stop raving about the manga and the Live Action series. And so far my expectations have been met with joy. Really enjoying this anime, though I have been warned about some hard NTR in the future...

Kekkai Sensen

Synopsis : A breach between Earth and the netherworlds has opened up over the city of New York, trapping New Yorkers and creatures from other dimensions in an impenetrable bubble. They've lived together for years, in a world of crazy crime sci-fi sensibilities. Now someone is threatening to sever the bubble, and a group of stylish superhumans is working to keep it from happening.
Tags : action, manga, science fiction, shounen
Thoughts : If battles with supernatural powers are your thing Kekkai Sensen is most probably the anime for you. Kekkai Sensen features a really well done world mixed with humans and completely out of those world beings. This might be one of the popular shows this season, but I'm probably wrong.

Which new anime are you looking forward to in the Spring 2015 Anime season. Trying out some new shows or sticking mostly to sequels like Fate/Stay Night and Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru. Zoku?

Best and Worst Anime from Winter 2015

The Winter 2015 Anime season is finally over. Personally I found that the season was a bit of a let down. Even some sequels weren't up to scratch. Yes I'm looking at you Aldnoah Zero....Below you will find the shows I thought was the best and worst of winter 2015. I'll also add my thoughts on the other shows that ended this season.

Best Anime Winter 2015

Cross Ange

Synopsis : Due to humanity obtaining the data technology that has evolved to a great amount - called "Mana" - the human race is able to subjugate all wars, starvation, pollution, and other problems on Earth by using its power, which is similar to magic. Earth has obtained the utopia of complete peace and no wants.

First princess of the Misurugi Empire, Angelize. As with everyone else, she also had no wants or worries. She was celebrated by the people of the empire, and was supposed to wear the crown. However, she realizes the shocking truth that she is a Norma. "Norma": An irregular existence that cannot use Mana, and are treated as heretics and as "things" rather than people. Having everything stolen from her, she isolates herself on a remote island.

What was waiting for her there was a fateful meeting with a group of Norma girls who know nothing but battle. The girls spend their days riding humanoid robot weapons called "Barameiru" hunting giant dragons that have come from another dimension to invade. Having her name taken from her, what will soldier Ange see at the end of the fight? What can she believe in? What will she obtain? The story of a single girl's fortitude starts now.
Tags : dragon, mecha, science fiction, transforming robot, violence
Thoughts : Cross Ange was quite the controversial Anime in some circles, make no jokes, Cross Ange is full of really dark themes that might upset some oversensitive people. Personally I thought Sunrise did a fantastic job with Cross Ange, there was never a dull moment, animation was good for the most part and the music was great. Using Nana Mizuki as a voice actress and for the music was a great idea.

Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso

Synopsis : Arima Kousei is a former child prodigy who lost his ability to play the piano when his mother died. His daily life is monochrome, but it begins to gain colour when he meets a female violinist by chance. Miyazono Kaori is an audacious go-getter who is overflowing with personality. Enchanted by the girl, Kousei starts to move forward with his own legs at the age of 14.
Tags : manga, music, shounen, the arts
Thoughts : I know what you are thinking, yes I did choose Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso last season. But it's still valid as it only ended in this season. For an emotional coming of age anime. This is well worth your time.

Yowamushi Pedal - Grande Road

Synopsis : The sequel to Yowamushi Pedal and the continuation of the Inter High Cycling Race.
Tags : cycling, manga, shounen, sports
Thoughts : The sequel to the fantastic Yowamushi Pedal kept up the great pacing, introduced a fair bit of new characters. Really delved into all the characters involved and kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the season. If you are a fan of sports anime. This won't disappoint.

Durarara!!x2 Shou
Synopsis : Half a year after the turmoil that rocked the entire city of Ikebukuro - Peace has once again returned to the city and people are living each day normally. The high school students enjoy their days of youth as the strongest and most dangerous man of Ikebukuro works diligently. The informant plots (or plans) a new scheme and the headless rider is pursued by the cops as she rides through the night... But soon this normal will be cut short by the abnormal. Slowly but surely, the unknown will seize the city and face an all new storm.
Tags : action, novel, violence
Thoughts : Durarara!!x2 was as expected. Brilliant. Lots of laughs, lots of action and some new twists and turns. If you are unfamiliar with the franchise. What are you waiting for? GO WATCH IT!

Saekano

Synopsis : One day, an otaku high school student Aki Tomoya has a fateful encounter with a girl amidst the beautiful cherry blossom trees. This meeting inspires Tomoya to design his very own gal-game (dating-simulation video game) featuring a heroine modeled after the girl he saw. In order to make his desire a reality, Tomoya must persuade a few eccentric creators such as the ace member of the art club, Sawamura Spencer Eriri and the school's top student, Kasumigaoka Utaha to join his development team. Meanwhile, Tomoya is shocked to learn that the girl he idolized as his muse for this whole project was none other than his boring classmate, Katou Megumi! But, this doesn't dissuade Tomoya. He is determined to give Megumi a total make-over within his game and raise her to be the absolute girlfriend that every man desires...!
Tags : clubs, comedy, high school, novel, parody
Thoughts : Saenai Heroine no Sodatekata or Saekano kinda took me by surprise. At first I was expecting a typical harem show about an otaku getting all the girls. But Saekano was more than that, all the characters were really well written, great animation and use of music. And the jokes kept on rolling. A must watch if you want something light hearted.

Worst Anime Winter 2015

Unlimited Fafnir

Synopsis : Twenty-five years ago, the world suddenly changed when monsters called Dragons appeared; seeking to ravage the earth and find mates. Over time, superhuman girls possessing the powers of the dragons, called D girls were born. Mononobe Yuu is the only male D in existence and is forced to enroll at Midgar - an academy for D girls. At the academy, he accidentally runs into Iris, a delinquent D girl, while she's naked, and even reunites with this long lost sister, Mitsuki, whom he was separated with at birth. Will Iris and Yuu, the boy who is supposed to become the strongest assassin, be able to challenge the seven dragons that threaten to destroy the world?
Tags : fantasy, harem, novel, school life, seinen
Why it Sucked : In anime one Rule of Thumb is, if it has dragons, it's probably going to be bad. Unlimited Fafnir didn't stray from this in any regard. Sloppy animation, paper thin characters, more plot holes than swiss cheese and an ending worse than being tortured by nails scratching a blackboard. Yes this show is really that bad. Steer clear!

Absolute Duo
Synopsis : Blaze is a weapon that is the manifestation of a human's soul. Kokonoe Tooru happens to be qualified for this, but for some reason his Blaze is not a weapon, but a shield. Moreover, he enrolled in a school that teaches combat skills, and thanks to the school's Duo partner system, he ends up living with a beautiful silver-haired girl.
Tags : action, ecchi, fantasy, harem, novel, romance, school life, violence
Why it Sucked : Absolute Duo? More like Absolute Trash.. It's not even a case of a bad adaptation of a decent Light Novel. Even the source is terrible. This show isn't even worth it for the fanservice.

ISUCA

Synopsis : When Asano Shin'ichirou decided to look for a job in order to pay his rent, his teacher suggested that he should work as a housekeeper. He managed to be hired by Shimazu Sakuya, the 37th head of the Shimazu family, who is tasked with exorcising and eliminating unwanted creatures. However, Shin'ichirou accidentally released one of the creatures that Sakuya captured, and now they must cooperate to catch it.
Tags : demon, ecchi, fantasy, harem, magic, manga, seinen
Why it Sucked :  ISUCA was a  mess from start to finish. The only good characters never got any screentime. The protagonists were dull, more annoying than interesting. The plot was everywhere and nowhere at once, nothing was really explained, There was a complete lack of character progression. ISUCA  isn't worth remembering. Best you erase if from your minds. Or file it under "AVOID"

And for the rest?

For the rest of the shows that finished this season. I'll only share my thoughts on each that finished this season.

Kantai Collection : Kancolle was fun at times, had decent production values. But all in all it's nothing to write home about. Then again if I was a huge fan of the game things would probably be different.

Shinmai Maou no Testament : An enjoyable fanservice show, with a fair bit of action and jokes. Has it's flaws. And sadly the TV release is overly censored for a show relying on it's fanservice.

Tokyo Ghoul Root A : I'll admit I wasn't a fan of the first season, and the second season didn't do much to change that. Kaneki was still a whiny girl, and the end felt like a cop out to me.

Akatsuki no Yona : A great fantasy adventure anime set in a historical Chinese setting. Lost a bit of steam midway but picked up nearing the end again. If you want a cool female lead and tons of sword fighting and the like, give this a shot.

Military! : A short comedy with very few good jokes. Not the worst waste of time ever.

Shirobako : Really enjoyed this anime, I liked most of the cast, except for one or two guys. But nevertheless a great anime that gives a possible idea of the amount of work that goes into making an anime.

Parasyte - The Maxim : For some reason I just couldn't get attached to this anime. If I had to use a song to describe it, it would be Crawling by Linkin Park. Felt like the show was trying to be overly edgy. And in the end they decided, less edgy more philosophical. And then ended on complete cop out.

Garo - The Animation : Great action anime that surprisingly not many talked about while it was airing. Had some good emotional scenes too.

Death Parade : Started off reasonably well, with just enough plot twist to make parts of it unpredictable. The plot was all over the place though, initially it was a "game of the week" kinda show, and then it went all existential and ended where it began.

Log Horizon 2 : Database intensified, that is all.

Ace of Diamond : Great long running baseball anime which doesn't follow the same formula as others like Major. Really want to watch the second season when it airs.

Aldnoah Zero Season 2 : After the fantastic first season, Aldnoah Zero 2 was disappointingly dull, it fell like they had no idea where to take the story. Music and Animation was top notch though.

Maria the Virgin Witch : Really good show from Production IG, had me shocked at moments :O

Dog Days Season 3 : A bit more action orientated than previous seasons, but still good.

Seiken Tsukai no World Break : A good example of when a show can be so utterly terrible, that it's good.

The Rolling Girls : Great music, and fun characters in whacky adventures. Well worth watching!

Yuri Kuma Arashi : Are you a fan of Utena and/or Mawaru Penguindrum? Then this is for you. Also YURI!

Koufuku Graffiti : Shaft did a great show with Koufuku Graffiti, always felt hungry after watching an episode..and strangely aroused. Tsuyuko was the best character by far!

I think that is all of it. What was your experience of the past Winter 2015 season? Was it good all round or also a bit meh for you.

Anime Spotlight : Top Anime from Yesteryear : 2006

It's time to take a trip down memory lane and take a look at the Anime of 2006. 2006 for me had a lot of memorable anime like Pumpkin Scissors, and some might even mention Death Note as their anime of the year. But here are my Top 5 anime from 2006!

NHK ni Youkoso!

Synopsis : Satou Tatsuhiro, a 22-year-old socially withdrawn loner, barricades himself in his apartment, subsiding on a meagre allowance sent by his parents, only venturing to the outside world to buy food under cover of darkness. One day, afraid he might miss the utility person, he opens the door to find a cute, mysterious girl, accompanying an elderly religious solicitor. Through what seems to be a chain of coincidences, the girl, Nakahara Misaki, enters Tatsuhiro's life, and promises him that she will cure him of his anti-social condition, provided that he follows the rules that she sets out for him. This takes Tatsuhiro from a desperate attempt at creating a galge computer game, to unwittingly joining a suicide cult, to participating in a pyramid scheme, to immersing himself in a MMORPG, along the way touching upon everything between hikikomori and otaku culture, existentialism, solipsism, theology, suicide, sacrifice and love.
Tags :  comedy, angst, novel, conspiracy, coming of age, daily life, tragedy
PV : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYLsjJ8RThQ
Thoughts : Welcome to the NHK! was a brilliant comedy by Gonzo that hit a bit close to home with it's main theme. It's a must watch for any anime fan.

Ergo Proxy

Synopsis : Sometime in the distant future, humanity has managed to survive, but only in isolated cities and through the use of cloning and robotic servants called Autoraves. Life in the cities is strictly controlled by management dedicated to preserving their 'utopian' way of life. But something is causing the Autoraves to become independent and is driving them to seek to escape the city. Re-l Mayer, a female inspector from the Citizen Information Board, learns that the awakening of the Autoraves is caused by an encounter with something called a Proxy. In seeking to learn more, Re-l stumbles into a secret that management is desperately trying to hide and will go to any length to keep suppressed.
Tags : violence, sci-fi, gunfights, action, contemporary fantasy, mecha, angst, android, seinen, conspiracy, post-apocalypse, dystopia
Thoughts : I loved the dark dystopian setting in Ergo Proxy, and Real Mayer is probably one of the most recognizable anime characters out there. though I wonder if the then popularity of women like Amy Lee might have been an influence. Manglobe did a great job with Ergo Proxy visually and auditory. If you haven't seen it yet, slim chance, give it a shot.

Ouran Koukou Host Club

Synopsis : Ouran High School is a school for the extremely wealthy or talented. Haruhi just happens to be more talented than wealthy. Since she had a hair mishap the week before school started and could not afford the school uniform, she was mistaken for a boy.

Wandering into the Third Music Room looking for a quiet place to study, she encounters the school's Host Club — a group of attractive young men who give their time and affections to females, for a fee. After she breaks an ¥8,000,000 vase belonging to the host club, the leader demands that she work off the money by becoming a host. And when they find out Haruhi is not actually a boy, humour ensues.
Tags : comedy, romance, super deformed, slapstick, reverse trap, bishounen, manga, shoujo, school life, high school, clubs
Thoughts : Ouran High school Host Club was one of my favorite shoujo comedies for a very long time. And the better role that Miyano Mamoru played in 2006, yes Suou Tamaki and Yagami Light has the same voice actor. Even though this show had a reverse harem, the humor is aimed at everyone not just a certain demographic. If you need a laugh watch Ouran high school Host Club.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni

Synopsis : Maebara Keiichi, a young teenager, has recently moved from the city to the rural village of Hinamizawa with his family. He is adjusting quite well to his new life, making friends at the small school, playing games, passing time in relative happiness, when suddenly a gruesome murder occurs...

A mystery begins to unravel — tracing back to events five years ago. As Keiichi learns more about these strange events, he wonders if he will be able to face the truth behind all of this.
Tags : violence, detective, angst, horror, visual novel, seinen, tragedy
Thoughts : Higurashi no Naku Koro ni really took by surprise, it's mix of cute lovable characters with a ton of comedy, and it's harsh darker side. Which did a great job in making those cute characters quite terrifying to say the least. Higurashi featured some really awesome music by Shimamiya Eiko and was filled with mystery. If you are in the mood for a good horror anime. Higurashi is not a bad choice at all.

Black Lagoon

Synopsis : When Okajima Rokuro (aka Rock) visits Southeast Asia carrying a top secret disk, he is kidnapped by pirates riding in the torpedo boat, Black Lagoon. Although he thought he would be rescued soon, the company actually abandons him, and sends mercenaries to retrieve the secret disk. He narrowly escapes with his life, but has nowhere to go. He gives up his name and past, and resolves to live as a member of the Black Lagoon.
Tags : violence, gunfights, action, manga, seinen, mafia, crime, daily life
Thoughts : Ahh Black Lagoon how I wish there was more of this show. Black Lagoon offered a good look into the lives of the gangs and inhabitants of the fictional city Roanapur. If you are looking for gunfights, great characters both male and female, and stunning visuals Black Lagoon won't disappoint you.

Thanks again for joining me on this trip down memory lane, what Anime from 2006 was your favorite? If you need a bit of a refresher this chart might help.

Anime Spotlight : Winter 2015's Most Promising Anime

The First Anime Season of 2015 is in full swing, other than Isuca which hasn't aired yet, so it's time share which 5 New anime is the most promising this Winter 2015! I haven't included sequels in this list as those need no real introduction. In general there has been some interesting shows this season so far and some average shows.

Saenai Heroine no Sodatekata

Tags : comedy, parody, novel
Thoughts : The first episode I saw of Saekano was very enjoyable, yes the show features a fair bit of fanservice but nothing over the top. Characters are well defined and are quite enjoyable, except for the childhood friend character. Had some really good laughs in the first episode and I'm looking forward to see how this progresses in future.

Kantai Collection: KanColle

Synopsis : In a world where humanity has lost control of the oceans to the deep sea fleet, the only hope to counter this threat are the Kanmusu, a group of girls who possess the spirit of Japanese warships. The story revolves around Fubuki, a destroyer who comes to the Chinjufu base to train with other Kanmusu.
Tags : Naval, Comedy, Game
Thoughts : I was fairly surprised by Kantai Collection, I knew it was about girls that are ships, I mean the internet has been full of the fanart for the past year, I initially thought it would be a bit...silly to say the least. Yes it's still silly, but in a good way. The show reminds me of Strike Witches and Arpeggio of Blue Steel, both shows I enjoyed. Production values in Kancolle are also quite high and I'm looking forward to see what they'll do with this show.

Yoru no Yatterman

Synopsis : Long, long ago, a pair of heroes called the Yatterman faced off against the mischievous Doronbow Gang, led by the sexy villainess Doronjo. Now, years later, the Yatter Kingdom is protected by the new Yatterman. But the mysterious new Yatterman have forced the Yatter people into labor, and unrest runs rampant throughout the kingdom. In the spirit of her predecessor, a young new Doronjo reforms the Doronbow Gang in rebellion against the Yatterman.
Tags : Science Fiction
Thoughts : The first episode of Yoru no Yatterman was a great start, a good mix of heartwarming emotions and some sadness with a bit of comedy added. This show seems like it will offer quite a bit of an adventure. I see it's related to the 1970's anime Yattermen, but there is no need to watch that one, as it's not a sequel. Enjoying the characters so far in Yoru no Yatterman.

Junketsu no Maria

Synopsis : The story follows Maria, the most powerful witch who lives during the Hundred Years' War in France. She despises war, so she obstructs battles with her strong magical powers. Her meddling with her succubus Artemis and incubus Priapos has caught the attention of the heavens, and so the Archangel Michael issues an edict. When Maria loses her virginity, she will also lose her magical powers. A beautiful angel named Ezekiel is supposed to watch Maria and make sure the witch does not use magic in front of people, but Maria continues to use magic anyways.
Tags : violence, magic, manga, seinen
Thoughts : Cute witches, succubi, good humour, great visuals, awesome audio, expertly done fight scenes. What more can you ask for? Be sure to watch this Production IG anime. Looks to be a ton of laughs.

Koufuku Graffiti

Synopsis : Ryou is a middle school girl who lives by herself. She has a knack for cooking, and she makes friendships with everyone through her food.
Tags : manga, seinen, cooking
Thoughts : I was initially interested in Koufuku Graffiti as I heard it's an anime about cooking. What I found was a fair bit more than just "cooking". Koufuku Graffiti has some really high production values, then again this is a SHAFT anime. Especially the look of the food and the eating reactions which were glorious. Food and lewd aside. The first episode had some really heartwarming moments in it and I'm looking forward to seeing more of Koufuku Graffiti

There you have it, the list of anime I found most promising this season, excluding sequels of course. Which anime from the Winter 2015 anime season are you looking forward to. Let me know in the comment section.

Top 5 Anime 2014

2014 is coming to an end and there is no better time to look back and see which Anime stood out above the rest. This list will only contain anime that started and ended in 2014. This year had it's ups and downs, The fall 2014 season being a fair bit worse than the others this year.  Without further ado let's get into the Top 5 Anime from 2014.

Gin no Saji 2

Synopsis : Hachiken Yuugo is a mild-mannered academic who chooses to move away from his sub-urban lifestyle and enrol at the Yezo Agricultural High School in the country because of strained relations with his family. He soon finds himself slowly getting used to his new environment with a short learning curve and grows into an empathetic and compassionate individual as he struggles to understand the world of agriculture and how it affects the lives of his new friends.

As the new semester begins at Yezo Agricultural High School, Yuugo is now used to the tough lifestyle of a rural high school, while still wondering what he will do in the future...
Tags : comedy, manga, shounen, coming of age
Thoughts : The second season of Silver Spoon starts off where the first finished without missing a beat. I was a big fan of the first season and it was an absolute joy to see them expand even more on the characters and the agriculture in Japan. The second season has a fair bit of emotional up and downs and some really cute romance.

Barakamon

Synopsis : Calligrapher Handa Seishuu moves to the remote Gotou Islands off the western coast of Kyushu, interacting with various people of the island.
Tags : Comedy, Manga, Shounen
PV : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2KYJRshRdQ
Thoughts : Barakamon started off really strong with a really fun first episode. The premise behind the show kind of reminded me of Silver Spoon which I loved. Barakamon was probably one of the most feel good shows out this year and I highly recommend everyone to watch it. The characters are loveable, the music was fantastic and the voice actors really did a stellar job!

Ping Pong The Animation

Synopsis :Two long-time friends Smile and Peco are both members of the ping pong club at their high school and are both very talented at the sport. However, Smile's quiet personality keeps him from being able to win against Peco. The club's teacher takes notice of Smile's talent and works to change his attitude toward the sport.
Tags : manga, seinen, coming of age, sports
PV : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmZVuMDlw-w
Thoughts : Ping Pong the Animation really blew me away, at first I was skeptical about the art work itself,
but the animation, music and story more than made up for it. I previously did a full review on it which can be found here

Knights of Sidonia

Synopsis : It has been a thousand years since the Gauna, a strange alien race with no known method of communication, destroyed the solar system. Thoughts : Ahh Knights of Sidonia a moody, futuristic anime filled with aliens, mecha and a very grim outlook on humanity's fate. Even though heavy CGI was used in this show, making the faces look more than just a bit strange, it didn't feel out at all, as this show features some of the best visuals I've seen this past season. Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun

Synopsis :  High school student Sakura Chiyo has a crush on schoolmate Nozaki Umetarou, but when she confesses her love to him, he mistakes her for a fan and gives her an autograph. When she says that she always wants to be with him, he invites her to his house, but has her help on some drawings. Chiyo discovers that Umetarou is actually a renowned shoujo manga artist named Yumeno Sakiko, and agrees to be his assistant. As they work on his manga Let's Love, they encounter other schoolmates who assist them or serve as inspirations for characters in the stories.

Thoughts : Probably one of the funniest shows this year, first episode had me laughing out loud. Really loving the characters in this show. Sakura is beyond adorable and the mockery of the typical shoujo romance cliches made for some great scenes that made me laugh till my sides hurt. Great animation and music combined with some well thought out jokes and characters that do a bit of a spin on the typical tropes makes for a must see series.

And there you have it, the 5 Anime that stood out above the rest this year, this wasn't an easy list to compile as 2014 had really great anime in general, so instead of me giving all the shows notable mentions I'll add an extra year summary of sorts for you.

As I didn't make a list for Winter 2014 I'll quickly mention the shows from that specific season that stood out for me as the best : Space Dandy, D-Frag!, Gin no Saji 2, Noragami and Saki : Zenkoku-hen. The bad apples where Mahou Sensou and Super Sonico the Animation.

How did you experience all the anime from 2014? Did you watch a fair bit or only a few shows throughout the year? As always share your thoughts with me!
